Has anyone ever filed Renters Refund? How long does it take to get your refund?
Q. In the state of Maine, and many others, you can file a Renters Refund, and get a refund on your rent or mortgage every year. I sent mine in last week and was wondering how long I will have to wait for my refund check.

What happens to your federal refund direct deposit if you added your check number to the account number?
Q. I called my wife to get our routing and account numbers while I was filing our federal taxes so the refund could be direct deposited. She relayed the check number to me at the end of the account number and I entered the extra numbers. The "Where's My Refund" site states that my federal refund was deposited on February 12. The bank has no record of the deposit (no surprise). My question is, what will happen to my refund? Also, how do I get a human voice at the IRS to talk to?
Asked by Jason - Wed Feb 17 13:02:21 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The bank will reject the deposit and return it to the IRS. The IRS will then cut a check and mail it to you in 4 to 6 weeks. Don't waste your time calling the IRS over this for at LEAST 3 weeks. It will take that long for them to get the status update from FMS, the agency that actually processed tax refunds. Once the IRS has the status information on your refund, you should see your check in your mailbox within about a week or so, depending upon mail time.

What does this tax question mean regarding refund of state/local taxes?
Q. "Did you receive a refund of state and/or local income taxes during 2009 from your 2008 tax return or a prior year tax return?" In 2008 we got a refund because we overpaid from what they took out of our paychecks. Does this mean I enter how much the refund was? Or is this talking about some other kind of refund? I use the standard deduction and the money where the refund comes from was withheld from my paycheck.

A. Tax refunds from state and local governments are treated as income by the IRS and must be reported on your federal tax return.

Q. I don't need anymore my backway ticket so I want to refund it. My airline is etihad airways. Is there any surcharge or penalty in refunding my ticket? By how much?
Asked by Lope V - Tue Nov 6 22:02:22 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. depends on your ticket. If it is a cheap one, sold on roundtrip basis, you won't get any money back (in fact, they could bill you the difference between what you paid, and the one-way fare). Talk to the travel agency who sold you the ticket

How much refund can I get from my taxes if I only earned $5k?
Q. I earned about $5k for 2007. I had my employer withhold max amount of taxes for me. If I were to file taxes, how much refund can I receive? I heard if you earn below certain amount, you get back most of your taxes. I am a student, my parents claimed me as a dependent. Does that affect the claim?
Asked by sangamania - Wed Jan 23 23:09:34 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You are going to get every penny back! If you claim yourself, you get to lower your income by $3,500. As a single you get another $5,000+ to reduce your income. That moves you below the threshold, so enjoy that refund!

A. It usually only takes 2-3 business days so I hope you still have the credit receipt. You should call your credit card company and tell them you are expecting a credit for this purchase and they can tell you the hold up.

A. Some stores will swipe the card again for a return, look at the receipt that was given to you, it will say credit. The speed of the refund depends on how quickly your bank processes the transaction. Normally it takes 2-3 days.

How does the refund process for a college class exactly work?
Q. I changed my mind on a class I'm registered and am worried about the refund process because my dad paid with a credit card. Does anyone know exactly how it works? Does the credit simply get placed back into the card?
Asked by redtinkerbell11 - Mon Jun 1 19:43:28 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No...at Penn State, where I went, if you drop a class, the refund check gets sent to your house (where you live when you're not at school...actually, I was off campus, so it may get sent to your dorm..but since this is summer I assume you're living off campus) and it's your name. Only you can cash it. It may be different, because it's a different school.

If my IRS refund was seized by the Department of Education, can my tax rebate check be seized as well?
Q. My loan is in default. After they took my tax refund, I still have an owing balance. I've gotten in touch with them and am on a payment plan, but will not be out of default for 8 more months. Thanks in advance for any insight.

A. Yes. According to the IRS: Q. I'm eligible for a payment but I still owe federal income tax from a prior year. Will my payment be reduced? A. Yes. For this purpose, the stimulus payment is treated like any other tax refund. This means that part or all of your payment can be used to pay past-due federal or state income taxes or non-tax federal debt such as student loans and child support. If this occurs, you will receive a letter explaining how the stimulus payment was applied.

How do poor people get these ridiculously high tax refund checks?
Q. How do poor people get such large refunds? The word 'refund' to me means that you had to pay the money first and then get the money back at a later time. Some of these people are unemployed/get paid low wages/have zillions of kids... etc and get big refunds. I know they don't pay enough in to get $5,000 back. What is going on with that?

A. You have to have kids to do it. The "additional child tax credit" and the "earned income credit" are both refundable credits. That means that you can get money back that you've never paid in. The IRS is fully aware of it, and Congress did it on purpose. I once gave a 20-year-old girl with twins a $6600 refund no one was expecting. She qualified for both credits and had filled out her W-4 as "single-one" rather than "head of household-3". I told her to fill out another W-4 and giver herself a $400/month raise. *** By the way, if you don't mind a little politics, this is the biggest joke of the new century. While democrats are screeming "tax cuts for the rich", the real tax benefits of this century have been overwhelmingly for the… [cont.]

How long does it take to get a tax refund for a previous years return.?
Q. I just filed my 2005 return and submitted it to the IRS. I have already received my 2006 refund and I am worried that it will take a while since everyone is filing their 2006 at the same time. Does anyone know if it take about the same amount of time to get a refund or will it take longer. I have never filed a return late but last year when I was doing the return I did it incorrect and it only showed a refund of about $18 so I didn't file it. I recalculated it and now I am supposed to receive much more so I sent it in..When I check the sites status it doesn't have any info and trying to call them takes hours..Help.

A. The rule of law is this. When an original claim for refund is filed, whether through a 1040 or a 1045, but not an amended return, and if the return is valid, the IRS must send the refund out within 45 days of the receipt of the refund claim. If the IRS does not send the refund check out within the required period of time, then they owe you interest on the money at the rate statutory rate, adjusted quarterly. Note, the interest income is taxable.

A. there is no system of checking the refund status on line in India. You have to go the Income Tax Office where u filed your returns only they can give you the current status. Income Tax department is trying to make the refund status available on line but so far they have not succeeded ( or may be they DONOT want to be so transparent)
