What rate is the water level decreasing when the water is 2m deep?
Q. A water tank has the shape of an inverted circulur cone with base radius 3m and height 10m. (a) If water is leaking out of the tank at a rate of 1m^3/min, at what rate is the water level decreasing when the water is 2m deep? (b) If the empty tank is being filled with water at a rate of 1.5m^3/min find the rate at which the water level is rising when the water is 7m deep.

A. Volume of cone = V = (1/3)(pi)(r^2h) where r = radius of cone h = height of cone By similar triangles, (3/10) = r/h hence, r = 0.6h Substituting r = 0.6h in the volume formula for the cone, V = (1/3)(pi)(0.6h)^2(h) V = (1/3)(pi)(0.36h^3) V = 0.12(pi)h^3 Differentiating, dV/dT = 0.12(pi)(3h^2)(dh/dT) Solving for (dh/dT), (dh/dT) = (dV/dT)/(0.12 * pi * 3h^2) and at h = 2, (dh/dT) = (-1)/(0.12 * 3.1416 * 3(2^2)) (dh/dT) = -1/4.5239 (dh/dT) = -0.221 m^3/min. b) When the tank is being filled, the same original function and its derivative are still the same. Substituting dV/dt = 1.5 m^3/min h = 7 m then (dh/dT) = 1.5/(.12 * 3.1416 * 3(7)^2) (dh/dT) = 1.5/55.418 (dh/dT) = 0.027 m^3/min.

How does the federal interest rate would affect the interest rate of a 30yrs fixed mortgage?
Q. im planning to buy a house and it would take 6 months to finish building it , i heard that the Fed might increase interest rate to combat inflation, would this mean that the interest rate on the time i would closed the house would also increase?

A. Undoubtedly you've heard today the FED has cut down the prime-rate by an additional quarter of a percentage point ( that's the interest rate banks charge to their best customers plus some administrative fees that vary among banks). So the interest cost is on the slide side; I don't think you'd have to worry about an increase by the time your prospect house gets completed. And, with efforts to revive the economy, I doubt if the prime ( that what you should be watching cause that's what your bank is watching too!) would go up significantly before early 2009. Go ahead lock in the fixed-rate mortgage. If interest cost does not go down any further ( probably another one half of a percentage point, before they give out money outright… [cont.]

What is the difference between a rate and a unit rate?
Q. What is the difference between a rate and a unit rate?

A. A rate is something like 50 miles per hour. Here it expresses the speed of a car -every hour the car moves 50 miles. A unit rate, also known as unitary rate is used to change units. It is called a unit rate for 2 reasons: 1. we are multiplying by "1" and, 2. the expression contains units. The unitary rate for km/miles is 1.0 km/ 0.62 miles = 1. See, the numerator is 1.0 km; the denominator is 0.62 miles. They represent the same distance and so if we divide them we get a logical value of 1. So if we multiply 50 miles/hour by this we don't actually change the answer because we are multiplying by 1 and we all know that multiplying by 1 does not change the answer. However the units get cancelled. Here it is (50 miles / hour ) * (1km/0.62 [cont.]
