Pregnancy??
Q. Hey, we are TTC our second child. I have a 28 day cycle with ovulation generally on day 14 or 15. Our first child kind of happened without planning so my question is in regaurds to my cycle, what are the chances of sex on day 6 leading to pregnancy?
Asked by flaminfortune - Fri Nov 24 20:42:46 2006 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Not that common, the sperm die about 4 days after sex and by the time your egg drops they will have all been long dead.

A. It's different for every person. But, if you go into it saying it will be horrible, then it will. Some of my friends had a wonderful pregnancy, while others had troubles. I had some problems at the end, however when you hold that baby in your arms you completely forget and want to do it again :) there are pros and cons. Your feet will swell, you'll feel huge, you'll be emotional, you'll have some cramps as your uterus expands, you'll have trouble sleeping, you'll be nauseous, you'll smell everything strongly... However, when you feel your baby kick and move around inside of you, it's amazing. Plus, people will jump to do things for you, like open doors or get you something, because they don't want you to suddenly go into labor :) … [cont.]

A. It all depends on how your incision is on the inside. If you are cut up and down then no you can't have a VBAc,but if you are cut on the bikini line(side to side) then yes you should be able to have a VBAC unless your doctor says otherwise.I've had 2 VBACs since having a C-section with my daughter 14yrs ago.The boys are now almost 7&9.You just have to be creful because you take the risk of rupturing. My advice is check with your OB and see what he/she says.

Is there evidence that pregnancy causes the mother to develop an autoimmune disease?
Q. My grandmother and a cousin both developed severe rheumatic autoimmune diseases after pregnancy, when being previously fine before pregnancy. I have not been able to find any additional evidence of pregnancy causing an autoimmune disease to develop, but am wondering if anyone knows of a link between the two, either clinical or anecdotal. I realize that pregnancy has effects on women who already have autoimmune diseases, but am trying to weigh the risks of developing an illness from being pregnant. Any additional information would be very helpful. Thank you!
Asked by Amanda - Wed Nov 14 20:21:37 2007 - - 3 Answers - 4 Comments

A. What happens is that the disease is not active, but there, and flares after the delivery. Autoimmune diseases are "triggered" and often dormant. I have RA. It was triggered by strep throat at age 27. I probably got it at about age 23, when it was assumed I had carpal tunnels from being a pastry chef. Turns out, after having the electrical test for carpal tunnels, I didn't have carpal tunnels. I was experiencing the beginning of my RA those years back, without the full-blown symptoms I had once the strep throat came along. Now I have the full-blown RA. Keep in mind that giving birth is a traumatic event to your body and trauma can cause an autoimmune disease. People have been triggered into RA by car accidents, believe it or not.

First pregnancy I had a delivered early what are my chances for the second pregnancy?
Q. I had to deliver my first baby @ 34 wks on hospital bedrest. How likely will I have to do this again with my second pregancy? Also since I delivered a healthy baby the first time, is there a chance I'll miscarry this time or will I likely have another healthy pregnancy?
Asked by skybrst7 - Thu Feb 25 11:14:29 2010 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. With my first, my son was born 3 weeks early. With my second, I went 2 days over my due date and then begged for an induction. Every pregnancy is different, unless there is a problem with you physically that caused your first to be born early, for example if you have an incompetent cervix. There is always a chance for miscarriage, but again, unless you have some physical problem that makes you prone to miscarriage, the chance for miscarrying isn't any greater this time than any other time. It's normal to freak out and stress! Just remember every pregnancy is different, and take good care of yourself. That's all you can do.

How many pregnancy tests did you take before your 1st appointment?
Q. 33f, not quite 5 weeks pregnant and have this overwhelming fear of miscarriage, even though this is my first pregnancy. My first appointment is not for another month. I have an urge to constantly take pregnancy tests to make sure the baby is still there. Does everyone feel this way, or do I seriously have issues? Please don't say anything mean to stress me out. I really want this baby.
Asked by ShrinkyDink - Thu Feb 18 08:39:45 2010 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments

A. You can test positive for a good week after you lose the baby and before you know anything is wrong. You can test positive even after you start bleeding with a miscarriage. Why bother? Stop stressing yourself out, there's no rational reason your body should fail your child, or that the baby should not be viable. Stress is the number one cause of early miscarriage. Get on with your life and stop freaking out, you're only making things worse. Every woman wonders, but you have a choice of either driving yourself nuts and causing problems, or making the purposeful effort to stay busy and keep your mind on other things.

when during pregnancy do you start to get heavy white discharge?
Q. I want to know if this sounds like pregnancy, it is a week after ovulation i have heavy white discharge and a little cramping. I've also been a little moody. I don't know if white discharge is a big sign of pregnancy or not.
Asked by happybee135 - Thu Aug 30 21:54:01 2007 - - 2 Answers - 7 Comments

A. It could be a sign that you are pregnant or just that you are about to start your period, but pregnancy symptoms don't show up until after implantation which usually takes 7 to 10 days so you wouldn't get symptoms till after you miss your period.

What is a chemical pregnancy and how does it work?
Q. I took an at home pregnancy test last week and tested positive, but then had my period a few days later. I would have conceived between September 20th and 24th, and my period came 6 days ago. I started reading up on this and found a lot of questions about chemical pregnancies. How do they happen? And how long will the pregnancy hormone stay in my system if the egg has already been flushed out? I can't get into my gyno until next week and I need to know what's going on now.
Asked by Jessie - Sun Oct 12 22:14:35 2008 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. A "chemical pregnancy" is just another term for an early miscarriage. Many times this happens without the woman even knowing she is pregnant. Usually the reason for this is because of abnormalities with the developing fetus or due to the embryo not implanting properly within the womb lining itself. Your doctor will probably advise you to wait for 2 - 3 months before trying again to conceive as it can take a while for your hormone level to return to its normal level. Usually it takes longer if you miscarry further along. So given the fact that you were only a few weeks along it should only be a week or two. Try not to worry... it is perfectly normal and happens more often than a lot of people realise as it often occurs very early on… [cont.]

Q. How soon during pregnancy do you start getting yeast infections? It been 12 days since i had intercourse so its not quite time to test yet but Im scared that i got pregnant. How long into pregnancy will a home test show a positive answer?
Q. I haven't had a period for almost two months now. So last week i took two pregnancy tests. One came up negative, but the other one showed a positive result, but was invalid because the line in the second window (that shows up to show that the test worked) never showed up. There is a good possibility im pregnant, but I'm not sure and honestly don't want to believe I am. How long should it take for a home pregnancy test to say positive?
Asked by Ashley Ann - Sun Jul 18 01:19:30 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It should show up as positive around the same time as you would expect your period to come. So it should show up by now. Go buy another test and take it (or two, just in case). They're most effective in the morning, and make sure you follow the directions exactly. If you still aren't sure, go to your Dr. and have a blood test done. But if you get a positive result with a pee test, they're really accurate and you can believe it.

Can signs of pregnancy start to occur within less than a week after intercourse?
Q. Help! A friend of mine was recently involved in sexual activity and is worried she may be pregnant. No more than a day or two after this sexual activity took place she started having splitting headaches, vomiting and experiencing nausea, she noted that these are some traits often accompanied by pregnancy. I have read that signs of pregnancy such as these should not start to occur until at least a week or two after the intercourse, but this information still does not cease the worrying. Is this at all possible? Could she be pregnant? Please help!
Asked by Ben - Fri Jul 2 23:40:04 2010 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, you can't tell you are pregnant immediately. She needs to take a home pregnancy test the day her next period is due.

How far into your pregnancy can you still get a negative test?
Q. I have been testing for a few weeks now, because I have been having pregnancy symptoms the past while. I have had all negative results. I will be going to the doctor only at the beginning of next week. How far into your pregnancy is it possible to still get a negative result?
Asked by unknown - Tue Nov 24 15:32:15 2009 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Well I guess it depends. Some people can get a positive result sooner then others. I first tested the day before my missed period and it came out negative and I had had it done at a hospital so it was a blood and urine test. I didn't get a positive result until I was already 7 weeks along.

How did your second pregnancy compare to your first pregnancy?
Q. Just curious:) My first pregnancy wasn't too bad. My biggest complaint is that I was tired all day, every day. I gained a total of 35 lbs. I didn't have any complications.. I had the epidural & I had a vaginal delivery. I am now 6 months pregnant.. I look like I did when I was 8 months pregnant w/ my son.. I am gaining weight much quicker. I am waddling like a duck already. I have cramps, aches & back pains. I have 3 months to go.. hopefully the delivery goes smoothly.

A. I totally hear you!!! I am 34 weeks with a girl and my son is 23 months old. This second pregnancy was so much more difficult. I was sick more at the beginning, I had to go to the emergency room twice with bleeding in my first trimester... I can't sleep, I developed restless leg syndrome, my back is killing me (I think I will be crippled after this), and yes, I am huge - definetally bigger than I was with my first one (I can't fit in any of my old pregnancy clothes by now)... I am also waddling like a duck and I am terrified of the labor...looking at this pregnancy - what else is going to happen??? (scream...ripping my hair out...lol)

How does an ectopic pregnancy and ovarian cyst affect a home pregnancy test?
Q. Two weeks ago I experienced my first cramps and still am feeling them mostly on the left side. I feel tired. And my period is now 7 days late. But I've taken 4 pregnancy tests in the last 3 days and all are negative, I'm not stressed my school is currently in fall break. My last menstrual was on sept 9.
Asked by Jessyka - Mon Oct 12 11:52:22 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you are really worried go to the doctor and they can get you checked out to be sure. They can do a blood test and those are usually very accurate. I wouldn't overly stress about it yet, until you know if your pregnant or not. cramping in pregnancy doesn't always mean something bad is happening. also, if you were having an ectopic pregnancy, you would be in alot of horrible stomach pain, and you would most likely be bleeding. but still check with your doctor just to be safe. good luck.

What causes teen girls to ignore a pregnancy until the birth?
Q. I'm talking about the occasional case of a young woman who somehow ignores a pregnancy until a baby suddenly arrives. This often ends in tragedy when the girl panics and abandons the child. What influences could lead to this behavior? 1) On a small scale - what sort of family dynamics might she have, what sort of personality, etc. What might pre-dispose a young woman to ignoring a pregnancy? 2) On a larger scale, is our society somehow leading to this problem? Is there such shame involved with teen pregnancy? Is it a lack of resources for mothers? Is it an emphasis on career over motherhood? Or, could it be an emphasis on avoiding abortion? A. speaking as a person who was pregnant I can answer the reasons that I did not tell anyone. Yes I knew I was pregnant. Did I try to ignore it? yes I did. My reason (although I know how stupid they are now) was mainly fear. Fear my mother would disown me, fear my boyfriend would leave me, fear that my friends would no longer want to be around me. Fear that my older sister would kill me. Shame that I had let myself get this way. Fear that people at school would find out. I waited so long to tell an "adult" that a doctor would not see me as I was to far along and had not seen a doctor. The only doctor who would take me was the local health department. Does a normal 38 weeks pregnancy start from conception or implantation?
Q. Sperm can apparently live up to 7 days inside a woman. Does a 38 week pregnancy occur anytime from these 7 days or does a 38 week pregnancy start from implantation which happens something like 12 days after conception?
Asked by stowey - Wed Jul 15 11:50:01 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. An average pregnancy is considered to be 40 weeks counted from the first day of the last menstrual period. It is more common to count from the first day of the last menstrual period because date of conception is not easily determined. Even using an ovulation predictor kit or monitoring basal body temperature and cervical mucous, you can't know for sure when ovulation occurred. At best you will come up with a likely time frame to ovulate. In addition to the unknown factor of when the egg is released from the ovary, you also have the variable of how long sperm live inside a woman. Sperm do have potential to live inside a woman for several days, possibly as long as 6-7 days if conditions are optimal. After the egg has released from the ovary… [cont.]
