France ( / ˈ f r æ n t s / frantss or / ˈ f r ɑː n t s / frahnts; French pronunciation (help·info): [fʁɑ̃s]), officially the French Republic (French: République française, pronounced: [ʁepyblik fʁɑ̃sɛz]), is a state in Western Europe with several overseas territories and islands located on other continents and in the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic oceans. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. It is often referred to as L’Hexagone ("The Hexagon") because of the geometric shape of its territory. It is bordered (clockwise starting from the northeast) by Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Monaco; with Spain and Andorra to the south. France is linked to the United Kingdom by the Channel Tunnel, which passes underneath the English Channel.

France is a founding member state of the European Union and is the largest one by area. France has been a major power for several centuries with strong cultural, economic, military and political influence in Europe and in the world. During the 17th and 18th centuries, France colonised great parts of North America; during the 19th and early 20th centuries, France built the second largest empire of the time, including large portions of North, West and Central Africa, Southeast Asia, and many Pacific islands.

France is a unitary semi-presidential republic with its main ideals expressed in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. France is one of the most developed countries and possesses the fifth largest economy by nominal GDP and seventh largest economy by purchasing power parity. France enjoys a high standard of living as well as a high public education level, and has also one of the world's highest life expectancies. It is the most visited country in the world, receiving 82 million foreign tourists annually. France is a founding member of the United Nations, and a member of the Francophonie, the G8, G20, NATO, OECD, WTO, and the Latin Union. It is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and possesses the third largest nuclear weapons stockpile in the world.

A. Well, french leaders are elected by universal election : one sunday in april (for example April 22th 2007, last election) every french citizen (above 18 and with the right to vote) go to the town council and vote for their two favorites between every political parties (a dozen of them). And in may (May 6th 07), we revote, this time we have to choose between the two candidates who stayed in league. We elect president every 5 years (since 2002, before that it was 7 years). Unusual laws... I don't know... well, people who went in prison cannot vote or be candidate, it's a punishment which is effective during some time. Or you meant in general? Then we have different strange and old laws, for example you can't spit out on the street and… [cont.]

A. A new law passed last february I think This is for both tatoos and piercings, because of the increasing amount of incidents. There's rules regarding the origin and how the products and tools were made, their shipping, especially if they come from abroad. There are also laws about hygiene of course, like the use of only disposable needles etc. One this website (at the bottom) you will find a list of the sterile set they are required to use:

Where can i get the cheapest ticket to France? Which is the most least expensive airport in France?
Q. Some friends and I are planning to take a trip in early August to FRANCE (3 people). We are going there to visit one of my friends family and to stay with them while we are there. We are three college students who are very low on cash so we're trying to cut expenses any way that we can. I'm located in Miami, Florida and my question(s) is, which is the least expensive airport to fly to in FRANCE? It doesn't matter where in france the airport is located because her family will come and pick us up. We are willing to drive just about any where in florida to get a cheaper flight. The cheapest we found is 850 per person... Also is there a preferred airline to fly to FRANCE? Or should we just stick with a domestic flight? Thank you, GaTo

  • The creation of Modern France through expansion goes back to the establishment of a small kingdom in the area around Paris in the late tenth century and was not completed until the incorporation of Nice and Savoy in 1860. The existing “hexagon” was the result of a long series of wars and conquests involving the triumph of French language and culture over what once were autonomous and culturally distinctive communities. The assimilation of Gascons, Savoyards, Occitans, Basques, and others helped to sustain the myth that French overseas expansionism in the nineteenth century, especially to North and West Africa, was a continuation of the same assmilationist project.
