Flying to Mexico how early should we arrive at the airport?
Q. I have not flown since 9/11 and I am wondering what exactlly we have to do when we arrive at the airport when flying to Mexico? How early do we need to go to check in, and is it more of a search since we are flying there? Our flight leaves at 6:45am we were planning on being there around 5am, does that give enough time?
Asked by dazednconfused - Thu Aug 9 12:56:29 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. They suggest that for an international flight that you arrive at the airport at least 3 hours prior to the flight. You want to give yourself plenty of time to get through customs and security and you wouldn't want to miss the flight because you got stuck in a long line. I would suggest that you visit the TSA website prior to traveling.

Flying alone for first time and I have a connection? How do they work?
Q. In July I'm going to visit my relatives in North Carolina. I will be flying from Buffalo to Raleigh, but all the flights from Buffalo to Raleigh have a connection. I'm 16 and it will be my first time flying alone so I'm sort of nervous about it especially the connection. My parents are going to book either U.S. Airways with a connection in Charlotte or Southwest with a connection in Baltimore. I don't understand how connections work though. When I get to the connection city, do I stay on the plane while some get off and new passengers get on, or do I get off and go to another plane? If I go to another plane, do I have to pick up my bags from the baggage claim or do they take it straight to the other plane?
Asked by Joseph C - Thu May 24 21:56:49 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You'll switch planes. When you exit, you'll already be in the right area -- you won't have to go through security again, or anything. You will just have to head to your gate number and weight. Usually you have way more time than you need -- it should only take ten to fifteen minutes. You might want to take that time to grab some food at the airports, they'll be located in that same area. Your luggage will be taken care of for you; you won't have to deal with that.

How to cope with fear of flying?
Q. I never used to be scared of flying but I am getting more and more anxious about flying not just a 9/11 type incedent but just a plane accident - I am sure Lost didn't help! I have also started looking up crash statistics which i thought would show how safe flying is - which they do but at the same time show all the gruesome details about crashes. Anyway does anyone have any tips for feeling a bit stressed when I fly (take offs and landings are the worst bits for me.

A. Flying as a whole IS safe...focusing on crashes and the details isn't helping you... One of the things you have to remember is the press has ALWAYS sensationalized aviation, particularly crashes - there are hundreds of thousands of aviation incidents (emergency landings, etc) everyday that turn out OK - but the press doesn't report that - only the tragedies...keep that in mind... If you don't want to go to the group therapy classes to get over your fear of flying (there are hundreds available), you may want to try and get a private pilot textbook (the library should have some) and read/educate yourself about how an airplane flies - and what happens to the airplane, pilot input, etc. during takeoffs, landings, and at cruise - sometimes… [cont.]

How do flying billboards work? How is it deployed after the plane is airborne?
Q. I see the plane flying and the banner or billboard follows behind it without flapping. It seems to remain vertical & fully deployed. I saw the G.I.E.C.O insurance ad flying over Turner Field in Atl. It seemed to be about 20 ft. X 30 ft. It remained vertical & level w/ no flapping. How do thay do that?

A. The banner has what's called a mastpole at it's front. Several bridles join into a tow rope, this is the end that it connect to the aircraft. Between every letter these is a rod. The Mastpoles and rods are all usually strong plastic, or aluminum. The mastpole sometimes is weighed down by something for additional stability. You didn't ask for this but it's interesting. the Banner is than laid next to the runway, and it's tow rope suspended into a loop by the end of the runway. It is held here by masking tape. The pilot swings down and a grappling hook gets hold of the banner, tearing away the tape.( masking tape breaks away easy er than duck tape) The grappling hook can be released from the cockpit, and this is how eventually the banner… [cont.]

How much does a flying instructor make on average?
Q. As somebody who wants to become a professional pilot and take a job as a full time flying instructor, I'm wondering how much a flying instructor makes? The training after all is very expensive and I'd need any position to pay enough to make sure I have a return on my investment! Thanks for the info so far... I have to admit that the whole reason for wanting a job as an instructor is that I love the smaller, slower aircraft and actually seeing the scenery! I want ot be able to share that with others by instructing them. Flying a giant taxi service from A-B as an airline pilot is not my ultimate goal. I guess I need to think about this very hard!

A. I was an Instructor at a small Part 141 school in Florida for nearly 6 years, from Jan 1999 to Aug 2005the last 2 as Assistant Chief Instructor. There was no basic salary, flight pay was $18/hr, ground school $15/hr. I also did some flying for the Forestry Service and US Fish & Widlife - with all that taken into consideration, if I made $200/week it was a good week! (Additional paperwork/student costs introduced since 9/11 hurt a lot and drastically reduced our student numbers from Europe). If the weather was bad, or students weren't available it wasn't unknown to make either nothing or maybe $50 a week - and that was being available 7 days a week and evenings for night flights - ie I couldn't take another job to help out! It's NOT a job… [cont.]

What causes flying insects to grow in or live in the soil of houseplants?
Q. I try to use only the best soil with my houseplants and put insect spray on them to prevent flying critters. Yet I still get them. What attracts or causes these insects (black and tiny) and what can I do about them?

A. The little black flying bugs you see around your potted plants are known as "Soil Gnats" or "Fungus Gnats". I will have to disagree with the above poster stating for you to drown your pots twice a week to rid the gnats. This is exactly just the opposite of what should be done. Fungus gnats thrive in moist, humid conditions, just what they have in an indoor environment. By soaking the soil twice a week, the eggs and larvae will thrive and multiply rapidly. The 4 instars of the gnat (egg, larvae, pupa, adult) only takes 3 weeks to complete. A female can lay upwards of 150 - 200 eggs before dying during her 7 days of life. The best remedy is to not water so much. Let the top 1" of soil dry out in between watering's (the larvae live in the top… [cont.]

Is flying in a helicopter scarier than flying on an airplane?
Q. I'm relatively afraid of heights, and I hate the feeling of free-falling. Flying in an airplane- like a commercial jetliner, not a Cessna- is scary for me. Scary, but I'll do it. Now even though I love helicopters, I've always been too afraid to fly in one. Is a helicopter flight more likely to give you that terrifying, zero-G feeling you get on an airplane's descent? Oh, and when I say I love helicopters, I mean I'm SUPER into them! Am I totally wrong to think that I'd be too scared to enjoy myself?

A. We went on a helicopter ride in the grand canyon. I sat next to the pilot. the only thing I found scary was the fact that you just go straight up, as oppose to an aircraft. It's a pretty cool feeling. I wouldn't recommend sitting in the front...the floor was glass and you could see how high you are

How do they get the videos of planes flying above the clouds?
Q. On game shows like the Price is Right, they often give away a trip and show a smooth shot of a plane flying in the air above the clouds. It seems like there is another plane with a camera flying right beside it and at the same speed. Obviously this isn't the case because that would be too dangerous to have planes flying that close together. How do they get this footage?
Asked by sgryzko - Thu Jan 11 14:30:26 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It's done exactly the way you thought. Two planes fly in relatively close formation and the videographer shoots from the lead plane (either through a special optically correct porthole, or with a door removed). There's nothing unsafe about it, provided the pilots are familiar with formation flying and they develop and brief a clear plan before the flight. Formation flying is challenging and fun, but it's not for the untrained.

How is it possible that a flying pokemon can beat a grass pokemon?
Q. the whole logic behind it doesn't really make much sense to me. i understand that fire beats grass and water beats fire and all that nonsense, and i understand that steel isn't affected by poison and that flying isn't affected by ground attacks. i also even understand that fighting is good against normal but weak to psychic because of mind over matter and strong people over weak ones etc etc. but why the heck is flying 2x super effective against grass?

A. Grass types are naturally weak against Flying types Some weaknesses are not so well known Like Psychic/Fighting, fire/water etc for example a psychic pokemon will easily beat a ghost pokemon even though it is a well known fact that psychics are weak to ghost but many won,t know that psychics have 1.5x effectiveness to ghosts and if the ghost is dual typed poison (like GENGAR) then the effectiveness goes up to 2.5x These are some of the knick knacks of th pokemon world that everybody encounters

A. They are little fruit flys and a big pain in the butt because they reproduce impossibly fast. We found a remedy by accident when we had them in our house. They LOVE red wine. after all, it's just REALLY old grape juice right? Take a water bottle and pour a LITTLE red wine into the bottom, (about enough to submerge a dime on its end) then make a funnel out of a piece of paper. It must be a tight funnel but not tight enough to block entrance to the bottle. Q. My daughter has two rooms of flying gnats, I believe you call them, in her house. She also has her little children and dogs, so she was wondering, as to what to do to ger rid of them...? What draws them to certain locations any way ?

Tape it on with liberal amounts of scotch tape. make several of these bottles and distribute them to every room in the house. A. If you dont want to use insecticides try pouring boiling water you can also add eucalyptus leaves, peppermint or lemmon grass to the water before boiling the water, the scent will drive the ants away.

When you are flying is there less tuburlence during the winter or summer?
Q. I am flying on thursday from New York to Florida and I was just curious, on a clear day is there generally less turbulence during the winter or summer months. Thanks.

A. I guess it depends on what kind of turbulence you are talking about. Convective turbulence will occur more often in the summer months as it occurs with the unstable air that comes along with the formation of storms. Clear Air Turbulence or CAT usually occurs at high altitudes when the aircraft encounters vast changes in windspeed at different altitudes (such as entering the jet stream.)

How to keep wild birds from flying into glass door?
Q. My mother had a new storm door installed and I guess wild birds see the light reflected and think there's a hole there. They keep flying into it and one or two song birds have died. What can she do to help prevent birds from flying into her glass door? It must be a reflection on the glass as the door behind it is dark brown and generally closed.

A. Here is an excellent website detailing the problems that cause birds to fly into windows and glass doors, and what to do to prevent it:
