A tariff (from Arabic: تعرفة, translit. tʿariffa: "fee to be paid") is a duty imposed on goods when they are moved across a political boundary.

History

They are usually associated with protectionism, the economic policy of restraining trade between nations. For political reasons, tariffs are usually imposed on imported goods, although they may also be imposed on exported goods.

In the past, tariffs formed a much larger part of government revenue than they do today.

When shipments of goods arrive at a border crossing or port, customs officers inspect the contents and charge a tax according to the tariff formula. Since the goods cannot continue on their way until the duty is paid, it is the easiest duty to collect, and the cost of collection is small. Traders seeking to evade tariffs are known as smugglers.

What is the tariff or any other special taxes for importing mexican silver jewlry into the USA?
Q. I'm looking to import around $1000 or so of Mexican silver and am trying to find out what if any tariffs or other fees I might have to pay to do so. I know that over $2000 you need a broker, but that's not the case here. Can I jsut have it shipped ups or fedex or one of these maling serveces and they'll handle the crossing? I'd appreciate anyone's knowledge.

A. You'll need to contact the US Customs Service for that information. Import duties are extremely complex and depend upon may factors such as the exact composition of the jewelry and the origin of the raw materials. If any duties are payable you'll have to pay them before the shipment is released. The charge will include the duty, any brokerage or agent's fees, plus local sales taxes if the port of entry is in your state of residence.

Will the government lift the tariff on Brazilian or others ethanol so the price of fuel can come down?
Q. From what I hear there is a 50 cent per gallon tariff on Brazilian ethanol, why do we have that when fuel is so high?

A. No, Congresspeople listen to the big farmers who don't want competition from foreign growers, and they care less what the average America wants. It won't happen. The new farm bill contains at least $20 billion in excess spending.

A. Get a t-mobile pay as you go phone. You put the credit on, call 879 and then just put text bundles on. I get 500 texts for 25 or you can get 1000 texts for 30. You're supposed to use all the texts within 3 months, but my texts are always there until they run out! Just depends what you looking for really...
