Can I sue my ex for arrearages in spousal support and medical reimbursement?
Q. Does anyone know if I can take my ex to court for these arrearages? He is also big time behind in child support but Friend of the Court is moving so slow that it's now at the $10,000 mark. In the meantime my ex has purchased a nice little Mazda RX7, and has a collectors BMW motorcycle!!! Can I attach them? Can I attach his bank accounts?

A. My ex husband was ordered to pay child support through the state Child Support Enforcement Division or CSED. All I had to do was apply for them to collect the support. I provided a certified copy of the child support order and then they took it from there. They executed his wages and then when he decided to become "self employed" and not pay, they could garnish his bank accounts as well. Got his attention real fast. Better yet, it was of no cost to me. I was also eligible to apply for a free review through and administrative law judge and the district court where our divorce was finalized, every three years. And, if either of us have our incomes changed by 30%, we can also have a review done for free. Having worked as a debt collector,… [cont.]

Reimbursements for company purchases - is that taxable income?
Q. So for example - I buy $50 worth of pizza for a company meeting. I turn in the receipt and the company cuts me a check for $50. Is that $50 going to show up on my W-2 at the end of the year, and therefore I'll have to pay taxes on it?
Asked by shambo - Mon Mar 3 12:15:15 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Nope. It's *reimbursement*, not *income*. They had already paid you the $50 that you took out of your wallet to pay for the pizza, and that $50 *was* taxed. The government can't tax the same $50 again.

A. Each company has their own proprietary formula. If you don't agree with what the insurance company comes up with you can appeal using the information from the auto traders, local want ads and kelly blue book for an approximate value.

A. Generally only prescibed glasses are enligible for reimbursement. You will need to check with your company on this. As for the claim in internet, don't forget this could be a marketing gimmick. Its best to check and be sure.

How do tax write offs work?
Q. I don't run my own business or anything, but I did purchase some equipment with my own money that I bought for work only. I was wondering if I could do a tax write off for this. Let's put it this way, I work Security and I ordered some nice gloves. Can the government at least give me partial reimbursement since my company won't? Also, I live in Oregon if that means anything.
Asked by Jon - Thu Jan 1 09:40:39 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The only way these items are eligible for deduction on your tax return is if they are only usable for work and not for every day life. That is why work clothes aren't deductible since you can wear them all the time. If they are just for work, you can deduct them on the Schedule A under unreimbursed business deductions. The amount that you can deduct is the amount over 2% of your AGI. If you don't have enough other deductions, it wouldn't matter anyway.

Is it worth it to accept a falt-rate taxable reimbursement that doesn't cover all work expenses?
Q. I've been a teleworker for about 8 years now and my company has always fully reimbursed my home office expenses (supplies, phone, internet, etc). I take the home office deduction for the space on my taxes. They have instituted a new policy where we will now receive $37.50 taxes per paycheck, which means a net of somewhere around $45/month - not enough to cover the monthly telecom/internet costs or the occasional office supply purchase, fedex mailing ,etc. I thin it would be cleaner for tax reimbursement purposes to not accept the flat rate reimbursement and just fully expense my true costs - seems more complicated to figure out the difference between net & gross reimbursements, the taxed amount, the true costs,e tc. A. If your company gives you a fixed amount per month they're no longer operating an accountable plan. Therefore the money will be added to your wages on your W-2 and you'd have to fend for yourself on any tax breaks. When your company operates an accountable plan the money is not included on your W-2 as wages and the IRS considers it a wash on your tax return -- no income and no deductible expenses. The only exception to that general rule are mileage reimbursements for the use of your car. If they're lower than the Federal reimbursement rate you can deduct the excess and if they're higher you must report the income. Companies can get away with reimbursing things that you cannot deduct. Phone and internet are good examples unless you… [cont.]

What can I do to get a reimbursement from a flexible spending account?
Q. In the year 2007 I opted for the flexible spending account my company offers. It was nearing the end of the year and I hadn't used much of it so I decided it was a good time to purchase new glasses. I mailed my claim on December 28, 2007 and as of today I have yet to receive reimbursement. I contacted the administrators on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 to find out the status of my reimbursement, I was told they never received it and I should re-submit it. I then faxed my claim to their office immediately from work, I even had the person in charge of these things do it for me. She then called them to verify that they received the fax and they affirmed this. I waited another week and I still hadn't received my reimbursement check from them… [cont.]

A. FSA claims always take more than 3-5 days. In the future, you should expect 7-10 business days to process a claim and receive a check. In the case where they do the reimbursement through payroll that should streamline the process, but if it's new there is always someone who falls into the "lost" category unless there is enough testing done to the process. The department of health and human services are the overseer's to anything that falls under ERISSA or section 125 (pre-tax) plans. Continue to work through your employer as they are the ones that pay the administration fees to the FSA company. They will have more pull than you will.

Do you give your personal information to retailers: phone number, zip code, etc?
Q. Whenever possible I politely decline to give my personal information to the store clerk who asks for my zip or phone number at the check out counter. I know that retailers use the information for statistical purposes for marketing means, but I do not feel that they should get this information from me for free. Reimbursement in the form of coupons in the mail, is not acceptable when retailers have the ability to track my every purchase when and where I do it. What are your views on this topic?

I am being asked to move from my apartment before the lease runs out? What should i get in return?
Q. The lease on my apartment runs until November. The landlord had the property up for sale, and some lady has purchased it. She is going to tear the apartments down and build condos, and wants control ASAP. Her agent is offering me two months free rent at $2500, and $500 for moving expense to leave by August. I am getting a bargain here, and i know that i will be paying possibly $250 more a month to relocate in this same neighborhood. The $3000 i would get from the buyer would only cover that increase in rent for one year, and then i would be stuck paying higher rent after. I didn't accept the agent's offer, i asked for reimbursement of $8300, which would cover the rent increase for almost 3 years in a new apartment. He told me that i was… [cont.]

A. Wow! I'd take it! You're still gonna have to move. August is much better to move in, than November. and...you're still gonna have to pay 'more' rent whether you move in August or November. I'd call a couple moving companies and see what their moving rates are. If it costs more than what they're offering...I'd tell them you got some estimates and you need a little more money. But...I'd go for it.

Does income eligibility for Virginia Medicaid include reimbursements from your employer?
Q. When they look at your income to see if your children are eligible for Medicaid (Virginia), do reimbursements count as earned income? It seems that if I am reimbursed for mileage driven in my personal vehicle, or purchases I make for the company, it's not income - instead it's simply the returning to me of money that I spent for the company. My case worker does not seem to know - she gave me two different answers in the same conversation. Anybody know? Please cite references. Thanks!

can you get a receipt copy from your credit card company?
Q. I need to get reimbursement for something by giving my receipt. It was from a gas station and I called them and they said they don't have it, but I called my bank where my card is through and they said they don't have receipt copies, just information about how much was purchased, where, when, etc. All I need is to prove I put unleaded gas in my tank and not diesel...I thought credit card companies could investigate and provide a receipt but why can't they?

A. They can give you written record of the transaction. That should be enough to get your reimbursement. It will have the time, date and charge amount. These transactions happen electronically and there is often not a written slip available. Trying to purchase a better car, can I receive any financial assistance from grants?
Q. I am a supervisor at UPS, A full time student, and an owner of an apartment. Times are hard and I have a 1991 Firebird that seems like it's on it's last leg. I'm doing everything I can to attempt to finance a newer car (my goal is a 2006 Honda Civic). Through UPS I have received about $6000 by way of their Tuition reimbursement program and I'm putting $4000 of that towards my goal. I was wondering if there is any grant, job, or way of getting a bit more money to help me afford something decent. I understand that the new Civics are pricey, but I need something that has undisputed reliability. So any help regarding grants or anything of the like would be appreciated.

A. The government is NOT in the business of giving away free money for the sake of giving away money. There are no grants for buying cars or for paying bills, no grants for paying off credit cards, no grants for getting out of debt Grants are free, but it means obligation. You will be obligated to do as the grant sets out to do. Grants have objectives, and your purpose must fit the objective of the grant. For one, you have to write the grant application and the grant application is not a simple document - you have to explain how your purpose for applying for the grant fits well with the objectives set out by the grant. There is a stringent review process through a committee. You will compete with other applicants for the grant money, and… [cont.]

What do when a seller doesn't refund money on Ebay and they said they did?
Q. My husband and I purchased a couple of items from a seller and this seller did not contact us but rather put the status of the sale that he "reimbursed" us for the money. When checking the account that we paid from there is in fact no such reimbursement. We have written to the seller asking for an explaination and for our money to actually be reimbursed (not just marked on ebay that it was) and we have written a comment to ebay customer support. Is there anything else that we should do? We have been using ebay for a few years and never ran into anything like this. I don't know if it makes a difference but the items were purchased from half.com and not an auction.

Ring Reimbursement?
Q. My friend and I went looking for engagement rings for his fiance. He and I went to an auction and he ended up purchasing a 2.5 carat Asscher cut diamond in a classic Tiffany's setting for $50,000. Well now the family of the deceased who held the auction are trying to get the ring back because it was never supposed to be sold. My friend said he'd happily return it if he was reimbursed the $50,000 but they refuse to pay. Can he take legal action?
Asked by s_oneal01 - Wed Apr 25 17:01:57 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on the terms. If there was an agreement with the original owners and the auction house that this piece was not to be sold, then the auction house had no authority to sell it. Therefore, the original owner has an action against the auctioneer. However, the purchaser, unless he had actual knowledge of any agreement between the owner and auctioneer is what is known in the law as a "Bonafide Purchaser for Value."And being such, he is the legal owner of the ring. The only legal action *he* needs to take is to get a restraining order against the family.

A. Pell Grants usually go right into your bank account, so it doesn't matter. It depends on your school, but my Financial Aid office takes out tuition, then deposits the rest of the money into my bank account for books, food, rent, whatever. One guy I know used it to buy a car since he was awarded so much. I say check with your school and their policy. Some schools mail a check since they don't connect with your bank account.

A. You can get a refund if you send in the lid to Peter Pan. (From the ConAgra site): "If consumers have this product, they should discard it, but save the product lid. For a full refund, consumers must return the Peter Pan Peanut Butter or Great Value Peanut Butter product lid along with their name and mailing address to ConAgra Foods, P.O.
